An Overview of the Role of Surface Plasmons in Optical Frequency Antenna's. The basic principles of coupling from free-space to the symmetric and anti-symmetric modes is discussed as well as the coupling to tunnelling junctions.

An overview of early investigations of optical and infrared sub-micron coupling structures. The unity between low frequency and optical frequency behavior is discussed in terms of surface waves. The role of nonlinear frequency mixing in antenna coupled tunnelling structures is particularly noteworthy.Some recent developments and out-standing questions are presented.
