The long way to Maui

At least some of this bird's ancestors came to the Hawaiian Islands by canoe, along with Polynesian settlers. When I emerged from my automobile, camera in hand, this fellow hurried over from the other side of the parking lot. Standing about 15 feet from me, he postured and crowed as if he were a professional model posing for a fashion shot. I suppose he expected a tip. The chickens at Koke'e State Park, on Kauai, are reputed to be descended almost purely from those canoe-borne birds. This Maui bird may have ancestors that took more circuitous routes from Southeast Asia, with considerable back-crossing along the way.
