Education l PhD Candidate Electrical Engineering, University of California, Berkeley, USA, Aug. 2009-present Advisor: Connie Chang-Hasnain, GPA 4.0/4.0 l MS Electrical Engineering, University of California, Berkeley, USA, May 2011 l BS Electronic Engineering, Tsinghua University, China, Jul. 2009 Graduated with highest honor and outstanding undergraduate thesis award, GPA 92/100, Rank 3/240
Research Interest My research interest is "nanoscale optoelectronics", which explores new materials and structures in nanoscale to achieve optoelectronics applications. I am currently involved in two projects: (1) Nanoneedles |
![]() |
High-quality GaAs-based nanoneedle and nanopillar structures are grown on silicon and sapphire substrates by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). This novel core-shell growth mode is catalyst-free and sees no critical dimensions in spite of the large lattice mismatch. With these advantages, nanoneedle-based light emitting diodes (LEDs), avalanche photodetectors (APDs) and lasers are achieved and show great performance. |
(2) High contrast grating (HCG) lens |
![]() |
Focusing reflectors and lenses using subwavelength high contrast gratings are planar, high-numerical-aperture, low-loss. Such structures are simple to fabricate with standard photolithography and may be readily incorporated in a variety of integrated electronic and photonic platforms. With all these desirable attributes, HCG focusing reflectors and lenses show great promise to integrate seamlessly with CCDs, solar cells, microscopes, telescopes, and VCSELs and to radically enhance their performance. |
