Requesting to Activate/Deactivate a Network Drop within EECS Offices
Please use the following port request form to request an activation or deactivation of a network drop within any offices in EECS Department (Cory and Soda Halls).
New port installation are currently free for CIS fee paying users.
A normal
request for network drop activation will take 10 working days.
Requesting to Activate/Deactivate a Computer System within EECS network
When registering a new or moved computer system within the EECS networks, it is the machine's system administrator's responsibility to coordinate this event with IDSG staff. An authorized system administrator can use the following registration form to submit the request to IDSG DNS staff, and will take 2 working days for the DNS changes to be updated.
Remote Access
The EECS department no longer maintains dial-in modems. The campus CNS group maintains campus modem pools for remote connection to UC Berkeley networks.
For a description of the CNS service, see their Accessing the Network Remotely page.
Network Time Services
IDSG has a number of machines which are running the "extended network time protocol daemon" (xntpd), which keeps their time closely synchronized to highly accurate clocks on the Internet. We recommend that UNIX workstations run "rdate" or "ntpdate" once per hour from a cron job using the interface of either cronus or rhea on your network.

Machines which need even higher accuracy can run xntpd
themselves, although this is discouraged unless the high accuracy is really
needed, as xntp uses much more network bandwith (and CPU time)
than timed. If you wish to run xntp, we recommend using the
IDSG pleiades file server machines as time servers (see the sample xntpd configuration file in /usr/sww/share/etc/ntp.conf).
Services Provided by IS&T
Information Systems and Technologies (IS&T) provides a number of network services to the campus community at large:
news server (NNTP): usenet.berkeley.edu 128.32.206.40
nameservers (DNS): ns1.berkeley.edu 128.32.206.9, 128.32.136.9
ns2.berkeley.edu 128.32.206.12, 128.32.136.12
