As a VIF you will participate as a regular member of an EECS (Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences) research team, as arranged by your faculty host. Other benefits include participation in department seminars and colloquia and auditing of any EECS department course (with instructor's permission).

EECS offers one of the strongest research and instructional programs in this field anywhere in the world. Our key strength is in cross-disciplinary team-driven projects. The integration of Electrical Engineering (EE) and Computer Science (CS) forms the core, with strong interactions that extend into biological sciences, mechanical and civil engineering, physical sciences, chemistry, mathematics, and operations research.

EECS at UC Berkeley is one of five universities in the world that produces a steady stream of inventions with commercial potential (, “Five Universities You Can Do Business With). Many businesses have been built around the technologies created in our research labs and centers. Along with teaching and doing research, students are encouraged to think about the business potential of their academic research which result in many start-up companies.
