Biographies
Michael Stonebraker has been a pioneer of database research and technology for more than a quarter of a century. He was the main architect of the INGRES relational database management system, the object-relational database management system POSTGRES, and the federated data system Mariposa. All three prototypes were developed at UC Berkeley, where Dr. Stonebraker was a Professor of Computer Science for 25 years. He is the founder of three successful Silicon Valley startups whose objective was to commercialize these prototypes. He is the author of scores of research papers on database technology, operating systems, and the architecture of system software services. He was awarded the ACM System Software Award in 1992 for his work on INGRES, and he was recognized by Forbes in 1998 as one of the eight innovators driving the Silicon Valley wealth explosion. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1998 and is presently an Adjunct Professor of Computer Science at MIT.
Eugene Wong, a pioneering researcher in stochastic processes and database management systems, joined the UC Berkeley faculty in 1962, chaired the Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences from 1985 to 1989, and attained emeritus status in 1994. With Michael Stonebraker, Dr. Wong was the co-designer of INGRES, one of the first modern database systems. He also founded several enterprises that contributed heavily to the growth of the Internet here and abroad. His research leadership includes posts as Associate Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, Assistant Director of the National Science Foundation, and Vice President for Research at the University of Science and Technology in Hong Kong .
Jerry Held has been a successful entrepreneur, executive, and investor in Silicon Valley for the past 35 years. He led the initial implementation of the INGRES relational database management system in 1973–75 while completing his Ph.D. at UC Berkeley. He then joined Tandem Computers, where he led the development of Tandem’s relational database products as well as corporate strategy and venture investments. From 1993–97, Dr. Held managed the world’s leading database business as senior vice president of Oracle Corporation’s server products division, including some of the earliest e-commerce application trials. He is now CEO of Held Consulting Group, advising CEOs and senior executives of technology firms ranging from startups to very large organizations. He is currently chairman of Software Development Technologies and is a board member of Business Objects, Openwave, Mirapoint, and MetaMatrix.
Peter was one of the original implementors of INGRES as a graduate student at UC Berkeley and its first full-time chief programmer. He did research on scientific and statistical databases at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and database systems development and developer environments and tools at the Ingres Corporation before moving on to co-found Perforce Software, an innovative supplier of software configuration management systems. After teaching and consulting, Peter retired and moved to Israel, where he is involved in investment in technology start-ups and in community projects focused on economic, environmental and social sustainability. He is currently the founder/ director of the Center for Healthy Living in Safed, Israel, a community educational non-profit dedicated to preserving and utilizing the traditional ecologies of the Galilee.
