The AMPLab is addressing new challenges and opportunities in Big Data analytics. We are developing a new data analysis software stack, integrating machine learning and data analytics at scale (the Algorithms part), cloud and cluster computing (the Machines part) and crowdsourcing (the People part) to make sense of massive data. Among our current efforts are: a new generation of scalable machine learning algorithms, data management tools for large-scale and hetero-geneous datasets, datacenter-friendly programming models, and an improved computational infrastructure. We work with application partners on campus and elsewhere to test out these ideas and real-world scenarios on real data sets. Current applications include real-time traffic sensing and prediction, urban planning, and crowd-sourced information and opinion gathering. AMPLab is sponsored by an active group of leading technology companies who participate in the work and provide guidance, industry insight and use cases.
