The Remote Desktop program is automatically included on all Windows computers. The first time you use Remote Desktop to log into the winterm.eecs.berkeley.edu server, a new profile will be created for you on that machine. From that point on, every time you log into the winterm server, regardless of from where you are connecting, you will be accessing that profile. If you are having trouble setting up or using your winterm profile, you can use Remote Desktop on your work PC to log into winterm, and we can help you with any questions that you have.
If you are trying to connect from a Mac, you can obtain Remote Desktop directly from Microsoft. Type "remote desktop client" in the search field on the Microsoft Downloads page.
Connecting to WINTERM
-
Launch the Remote Desktop Connection client (START -> Program Files -> Accessories -> Remote Desktop Connection).
NOTE: You may find the "Remote Desktop Connection" one level up — in the "Accessories" folder rather than the "Communications" folder.
-
In the Computer field, type in:
winterm.eecs.berkeley.edu -
If you are not prompted right away to enter your user name,
click on "Use another account."
In the User Name field, use:
login
@eecs.berkeley.edu(e.g. maggie@eecs.berkeley.edu) and your regular EECS password.
Accessing Files
Every time you log into winterm, you will be prompted with a security warning: click OK. These directions are to be followed while you're in winterm, not your local computer.
- Your personal files are in your H: drive, just like on your work PC. Your "My Documents" folder should also be the same.
-
You will need to map the shared drives, CHAIR and DEPTWEB, to your
winterm profile. Here's how:
- Open your START menu, right-click on "Computer," and select "Map Network Drive" (it should be about halfway down the list).
-
To map a drive to the CHAIR share, enter:
\\project.eecs.berkeley.edu\chair
in the "Folder" field and make sure that the "Reconnect at logon" box is checked. - If it isn't found, check to see that your slashes are going in the right direction.
- Click "Finish"
-
To map a drive to the DEPTWEB share, enter:
\\project.eecs.berkeley.edu\deptweb
in the "Folder" field.
-
To create a shortcut from your desktop to a shared drive:
- Open your START menu and select "Computer."
- In the "Network Drives" section, right-click on the shared drive in question and select "Create Shortcut". If a dialog box asks if you would like it placed on the desktop, say "Yes."
WARNING: Do not leave any files on your winterm desktop. There is very little space and no back-ups are being made so if anything happens, there is no way for ACG to retrieve the files.
Reading Mail
On a PC or Laptop
We recommend that you log into CalMail from a web browser
to check your mail, using the URL:
http://calmail.berkeley.edu
If you do use Thunderbird on winterm, be sure to disable message synchronization in the Synchronization and Storage tab for the account in Account Settings. User storage space on winterm is tightly limited, and Thunderbird's local mailbox copy can easily overload the space and make it so nothing works for you on winterm.
If you didn't disable this feature and your winterm disk is full, follow these procedures for Clearing Up Space On Winterm.
