Currently, weather forecast data is not used in path planning for aircraft. Hence, extreme weather patterns cause large delays in the national airspace. Moreover, in the presence of convective weather, aircraft paths are constrained through narrow regions of the airspace and consequently the potential loss of separation of aircraft is increased. We are developing algorithms that use convective weather data in order to design collision free optimal paths for aircraft.
