Stochastic resonance is an intriguing phenomenon, whereby noise can be used to enhance the ability of a system to perceive low-energy signals in the environment. We adopt a combined control-theoretic/information-theoretic formulation and study how best to design a source of external randomness to the system so that the mutual information rate between the ambient signal and the output of the system is maximized.
