Towards Real Time Battery Pack Models

Standard approaches to cell-level battery modeling vary from low fidelity circuit-like abstractions of batteries to high fidelity full 3-D multiscale CFD models. Detailed electrochemical models, such as 1-D porous electrode theory, have been successfully applied to single cell level models to accurately predict cell performance under different operating conditions. For real-time pack level modeling, we are designing novel techniques to maintain high fidelity without modeling every cell with its own electrochemical model. Our ultimate goal is to provide accurate estimates of important electrochemical parameters that measure the state of life of the battery and provide prognostic capabilities to prevent future failures.
