Collaborative Research: Interactive Choreography in 3D Tele-immersive Spaces--Expanding Human Perception Through Creative Practice

During the last four years, we have built a unique and advanced tele-immersive cyber-infrastructure that connects two geographically distributed laboratories, one at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (Prof. K. Nahrstedt's Laboratory) and one at University of California, Berkeley (Prof. R. Bajcsy's Laboratory). Both laboratories have the capabilities to immerse people into three dimensional (3D) cyber-spaces allowing for synchronous and interactive activities in cyberspace. These 3D spaces provide new sets of digital options, for example, abilities to change scale, number and background of cyberspace participants, for physical interactions, and allow for remote physical interactions to take place in real time.

Our objectives are to investigate (a) how the 3D technology will motivate, encourage, and stimulate dancers in their creative processes through a model of dance within 3D immersion, (b) what are the new elements of the IT technology (e.g., new view management capabilities, new synchronization protocols) that support new choreography in dance, i.e., "Interactive Choreography in 3D Tele-Immersive Spaces," and (c) what are the two different interfaces for two very different groups of users: the dancers and the choreographers.

The significance of this research is in developing new forms of choreography which eventually move dance out of the proscenium stage to different multi-location performance environments.
