Job Description

The Student Coordinator positions have been filled for Spring 2003.


BACKGROUND:

The mission of Double X is to expose high school girls to the fields of science, engineering and math, and motivate them in those fields. With periodic visits from current Cal undergraduate and graduate women students, Double X provides role models and essential communication to high school girls. An EECS Staff Coordinator will provide administrative support to the Berkeley Student Coordinator and for the program as a whole.

GOALS:

DUTIES:

  1. Report to and maintain communication with CUGM Staff Coordinator for infrastructure issues (web page, student roster, coordinating rooms and materials for information sessions and final event) throughout the semester.
  2. Organize 2-3 information and brainstorming sessions at the beginning of the semester to recruit undergraduate and graduate student teachers from the SEM community at Cal.
  3. Recruit interested female graduate and undergraduate students who would be willing to run a one-hour science or engineering lesson on two different occasions (once at each school).
  4. Maintain contacts with one teacher at both Oakland Technical HS and Thurgood Marshall HS.
  5. Organize a calendar of presentations for the semester and meet with student teachers to help plan interesting activities for each meeting.
  6. Assemble necessary materials (i.e., BART/AC Transit passes and schedules and materials needed for the presentation).
  7. Travel to high school sites with student teachers to assist in set-up, coordination and evaluation of each session.
  8. Collect all lesson plans electronically for Staff Coordinator no later than one week after the presentation. The Staff Coordinator will post lesson plans on the Double X web site.
  9. Administer expense budget for materials as in #6 above, and submit to Staff Coordinator at conclusion of semester.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to take initiative, lead meetings, and brainstorm ideas with students
  • Background in science, math, engineering, and/or science education
  • Ability to set and meet deadlines
  • Interest in science education

COMPENSATION and TIME COMMITMENT:

The Student Coordinator(s) will be expected to work approximately 5-10 hours per week and will be compensated in the form of a stipend at the end of the semester, provided all duties as outlined above are accomplished.
