Berkeley Innovation Overview and Application Information Session
Tuesday, February 12th, 2008 112 Wurster Hall (Next to Ramona's) 7:15PM
This event will be webcasted. See below for details.
WHO WE ARE: We are a multidisciplinary group of undergraduate and graduate students drawn together by a love for innovation - that is, creativity applied.
WHAT WE DO: In the past, we've worked with Apple, Nokia, 3M, the ASUC, UCPD, and toured the facilities of IDEO, Pentagram Design, Google, and Accenture Tech Labs.
Each week, we meet for two hours to learn and use structured creativity techniques like TRIZ and DeBono's six thinking hats to come up with creative solutions to problems that we experience as 18-26 year old students on and off campus.
These brainstorms often lead us to ideas that blossom into projects that generally last one semester.
CAN'T MAKE THE DATE? This presentation will be webcasted and available on the Berkeley Innovation website on Wednesday, February 13th, 2008 at 10:00AM. The application will also be available online.

Event: Talk by Chief Scientist Andrew Tomkin - Content Trends and Privacy in
Web Search
Time: 5:00 - 7:00 pm

Title: Content Trends and Privacy in Web Search
Abstract:
Non-professional creation of public online content has outstripped professional content creation of all forms, both online and offline. However, two orders of magnitude more content are created daily to flow through social networks, with as much as two more orders of magnitude still to come as user engagement increases. At the same time, content is diversifying in creation, consumption, and nature. In this talk, Andrew Tomkins will cover these trends and their implications for academic research. Finally, he’ll share some recent research results concerning privacy issues in sharing of query log data.
Bio:
Andrew Tomkins joined Yahoo! Research in 2005 from IBM. His research over the last eight years has focused on measurement, modelling, and analysis of content, communities, and users on the World Wide Web. Prior to joining Yahoo! Research, he managed the “Information Management Principles” group at IBM’s Almaden Research Center, and served as Chief Scientist on the WebFountain project. Andrew received Bachelors degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science from MIT, and a PhD in CS from Carnegie Mellon University.

Seeking Business and CS/Engineering Students
The Global Lives Project (GLP) is a 501c3 nonprofit new media startup that leverages the power of peer-production and digital video technology to create a video library of human life experience. Inspired by projects like Wikipedia and Linux, we are a collaborative effort of more than 80 volunteers in 8 countries working to reshape global mediascapes and fundamentally change how individuals from diverse cultures and nations regard one another.
Based in San Francisco and São Paulo, Brazil, we have three major program areas under development: 1) a traveling video installation featuring ten 24-hour recordings of daily life from around the world, 2) a participatory online video library based on the installation's content and accepting public submissions and 3) educational curriculum materials to bring our content into classroom settings. We have conducted video shoots in Brazil, Malawi, Japan and the US, and we are planning to conduct an additional six recordings in Asia and Eastern Europe in 2008.
We are looking for graduate or exceptional undergraduate students in business, computer science, engineeering or related fields from UC Berkeley to intern during the 2008 Spring semester to drive forward aspects of each of these initiatives. Internships require a commitment of a minimum of 10 hours per week during 13 weeks. Each intern will meet once weekly in person or by phone/video with Executive Director, David Harris (Cal '03) or Lead Web Architect, Arthur Hebert (Cal '04). All positions are unpaid. They will be provided with additional orientation by Tata in India prior to traveling to their individual assignments. On-the-job translation assistance will be provided by Tata staff. This is the first year of a new program. The program will be closely monitored and evaluated. Students will be asked to make presentations on their findings and recommendations to Tata Corporate Sustainability Services management team prior to departure from India. Interns will also participate in a Berkeley-Tata workshop on the program following their return.
Tata will cover all in-country travel and living costs and provide interns with a modest daily stipend for incidental costs. Interns will be housed in guest accommodations operated by Tata. Interns are expected to cover a portion of their international travel expenses (approximately $500).
Intel is hosting a Virtual Chat to talk about their Intern Program!
The Intern Program Manager and a panel of current and past Intel Interns will share their experiences at Intel and on the transition from school, to internship, to full-time employment.
Afterwards, the Intern Program Manager and Intern Team will be available to answer your questions.
