Summer 08 Global Micro-Clinics Project Fellowships

Applications and full details are available at http://blumcenter.berkeley.edu/

The Global Micro-Clinic Project (GMCP), in conjunction with the Blum Center for Developing Economies and the School of Public Health at UC Berkeley, are excited to announce a new project site in Jordan.

Originally founded by UC Berkeley undergraduate Daniel Zoughbie in 2005 to begin work in Palestine, the GMCP now aims to expand its network of micro-clinics where disenfranchised populations can share medical equipment, access vital treatment options for disease and health conditions, and participate in health education. The micro-clinic model relies on the volunteer efforts of local health care professionals and concerned citizens to improve the health of their communities. The micro-clinics create an infrastructure that is not owned by either a governmental organization or an NGO. The people are the micro-clinics.

Beginning in June 2008, the GMCP will establish 50 micro-clinics outside of Amman, Jordan. Fellowships have been established to support a select group of undergraduate and graduate students to collaborate with local stakeholders to:

* Develop a strategy for the micro-clinics that best serves the diabetes challenges in that area or region * Create project infrastructure * Strengthen partnerships with local organizations and individuals * Develop and launch an outreach campaign * Facilitate health training and education for volunteers and participants * Evaluate and monitor the micro-clinics

Fellowships:

The GMCP Ojjeh-Kamal Fellowships are made possible through the generosity of Mr. Bassel Ojjeh and Ms. Lisa Kamal. These competitive fellowships will be awarded to one or two outstanding student(s) from UC Berkeley at the graduate or undergraduate level. The three month fellowship will be funded at $5,500 for summer 2008. This is inclusive of travel and living expenses.

The GMCP Lifchez Fellowship is made possible through the generosity of UC Berkeley Professor Ray Lifchez. This competitive fellowship will be awarded to one outstanding undergraduate at UC Berkeley. The three month fellowship will be funded at $5,500 for summer 2008. This is inclusive of travel and living expenses.
