Greetings UC Berkeley Hackers and Mashers!!

As you probably know by now, the big university hack day is next week so we wanted to send you the basic schedule of events along with a few tips for surviving and thriving at Yahoo Hack Day! First and foremost, be sure to show up at the Hack U Kickoff Event on Friday October 19^th which will feature hack lessons, interesting talks and hilarious stories from industry experts and web innovators such as:

Rasmus Lerdorf- Inventor of php
Ryan Kennedy- The brain behind the new mail API Cascade
Arlo Rose- Designer of Konfabulator (aka Yahoo Widgets)

And as always there will be plenty of good food, free giveaways, games and raffle to win a Wii among other prizes. After the talks begin you have exactly 6 hours to finish your hack, and remember it’s not about perfect code. It’s all about turning a great idea into a working prototype.

11:00am - 12:00 pm - Intro to Hack Talk/examples/workshops
12:00pm - 1:00pm Lunch Talk www.developer.yahoo.com check out this site and let me know what looks interesting
1:00pm - 2:00pm - Cascade, more hack lessons, YUI library stuff
2:00pm - 6:00pm - Official hacking begins (you can stay or go hack anywhere...we will hang out to give support/ideas/help/music/food)
6:00pm- 7:00pm - Submit whatever you have at 6pm sharp here: http://developer.yahoo.com/hacku and the demos and judging will follow immediately (You must be present to win)
7:00pm - 9:00pm - Drinks/Food/After party

Check out the Website for everything else you need (and yes, some stuff you don’t) You may have already done this, but if not, here’s the place: http://developer.yahoo.com/hacku

Come show off your kung fu in HTML, Javascript, PHP, Python, Ruby, Perl, Flash, Air, Silverlight, YUI, Prototype, jQuery or whatever else you are into. Your code doesn't need to be perfect, nor pretty. Use whatever tools you want to bring a cool idea to life and win big prizes in the process.

A few reminders…You're not restricted to using Yahoo! APIs and services, but the judges seem to like it if you can work one of them into that mashup. We don’t want the rights to your code or ideas…we just want to see your passion become reality! For more inspiration, please take a look at the Apps Gallery (http://gallery.yahoo.com), the Widget Gallery (http://widgets.yahoo.com/gallery/), and the APIs and tips on the Yahoo! Developer Network site (http://developer.yahoo.com/ ) and the YUI Library http://developer.yahoo.com/yui for some easy ways to get started!!

The 6 hour hacking period begins…at 12 noon on October 19th …come to the Woz for food, caffeine, free stuff, games, raffle prizes, inspiration and fun. C’mon someone needs to challenge the developers to a game of faceball! http://www.faceball.org. Final submissions due on October 19th at 6:00pm-you can submit on the website. Demos, Judging, Awards and Party immediately following. More details to come at the kickoff event!

Demo Your Hack On Our Laptop or Your own

There will be two Yahoo! Windows laptops and two open monitor connections, with Mac adapters if needed. For best results, you'll sit down in front of one of our laptops, open a fresh Firefox window, and demo your hack from a public Web host.

Some Notes On Getting Your Presentation Right

You'll have a limited time (about 5 minutes or less) to present. Here's what you should try to show in that time: 1) The cool idea behind your hack- what inspired you to sweat through this!?.. 2) That it actually does work, right then and there 3) How your hack works…we love this stuff! 4) Enjoy yourself and don’t take it too seriously….we love the hacks and hackers that make us laugh and have fun with it all! Oh and don’t forget about the peer choice award…humor goes along way…and for the record so does crying…we don’t recommend that right away but if all else fails go for the sympathy vote!! Ok that’s all for now…let us know if you have any questions or need anything else, otherwise hack on and we’ll see you next week!

Have a great weekend, Yahoo Hack Team

Now if you have just a little more time, check out some of the past Yahoo! Hack Days we’ve done… Beck even showed up to play some inspiring tunes for the all night Sunnyvale hack fest!

Cool examples:

The list of winners from the past public Hack Day is here: http://developer.yahoo.net/hackday/ ... along with videos from two of our best presentations, Matt Sweeney's "Web 2.0: Getting It Right the Second Time" and Ian Lamb's "The New Hacker's Tookit."
