Publish Your Grad School Admissions Essay
Want to get published for an essay you've already written?
How would you like $50 worth of FREE BOOKS?
SparkNotes is currently publishing a new guide to writing successful graduate school admissions essays. While the first half will serve as a "how-to" guide for writing effectively, the latter will include essays that really worked for students, especially those that were accepted into top graduate programs (any discipline).
Send an email, including the name of your school/program and the essay as an attachment, to Lindsay Weiskittel at lweiskittel@bn.com. PDF and Word files only. No phone calls, please. If selected, your name (or pseudonym, if you prefer), essay, and school affiliation will appear in the published book, and you will receive a $50 Barnes & Noble gift card. Please only send those essays for the school you chose to attend.
An effort to raise awareness is the upcoming Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW) 2007 -- October 15-19th!
An exciting array of activities is planned, including lectures, films, discussions and wellness check-ins with professional counselors. Co-sponsored by University Health Services, ASUC and various student groups, this is a collaborate effort to educate the community, break down stigma and open up dialogue about mental health issues. All of the activities are free and open to faculty/staff/students and the community at large.
For a full schedule of activities please see the event: http://uhs.berkeley.edu/mhaw

Chevron Information Technology Company wishes to award two scholarships of $2500 each to EE or CS undergraduates!
Criteria:

I am on the Steering Committee for the 2007 International Test Conference (ITC). ITC is the world’s premier conference dedicated to the electronic test of semiconductor devices, boards, and systems.
ITC is asking for student volunteers from UC Berkeley to help during our upcoming conference.
ITC 2007 starts on Tuesday October 23 and runs thru Thursday October 25, at the Santa Clara Convention Center. (See the advance program at http://www.itctestweek.org.)
Most of the volunteer tasks are data collection and entry. We collect ratings and comments on each technical session. The volunteers enter the data in Excel spread sheet format. (They should bring laptop computers.) The work is well within the capability of undergraduate engineering students, and the access to the conference should be of interest to graduate students as well.
Here is an approximate schedule of the volunteers we will need:
Tuesday 10/23
1 volunteer 10:30AM to 2:30PM
2 volunteers 2:00PM to 6:00PM
Wednesday 10/24
1 volunteer 9:00AM to 1PM
3 volunteers 1:00PM to 5:00PM
Thursday 10/25
2 volunteers 9:00AM to 1PM
3 volunteers 1:00PM to 5:00PM
Each student volunteer will get a full conference admission so (s)he can attend any technical sessions as desired, visit the exhibits, and receive a complimentary box lunch. There are also opportunities to meet and talk to engineers working in the field of semiconductor test. It is mutually beneficial to student volunteers and ITC.

Financial Technology Associates Program
Citadel's roots can be traced to Harvard College in the late 1980s when Ken Griffin developed his first convertible bond arbitrage model and began trading from his dorm room. After graduating from Harvard in three years, Ken moved to Chicago to work for Glenwood Capital Management, and just over a year later, started Citadel in November 1990 with $4.6 million in capital.
A hallmark of Citadel's success has been diversifying into new investment strategies and businesses opportunistically over time. Whereas Citadel's early focus was strictly on US convertibles, Ken expanded the business to include investments in Japanese equity warrants and European convertible bonds in the early 1990s. In 1994, Citadel entered several non-credit related businesses. In the early part of this decade, we added both energy expertise and fundamental capabilities in areas such as equities. Throughout approximately 17 years of history, we have successfully integrated businesses to create one of the world's leading financial institutions focused on alternative investment strategies. Today, Citadel's operations include nine global, proprietary investing businesses: Global Credit, Global Energy, Global Equities, Global Markets and Quantitative Strategies, Global Rates, Principal Strategies, Securitized Products, Emerging Markets and Reinsurance. In early 2007 we launched Citadel Solutions and Citadel Alternative Asset Management, our administrative services and fund of hedge fund businesses, extending our platform in the alternative investment industry. Under the direction of the Citadel team, we have set out to redefine what a firm like ours can do in the finance industry.
Today, Citadel is a global leader with over one thousand employees and approximately $15 billion in investment capital. Our global footprint reaches across six offices including our headquarters in Chicago as well as New York, San Francisco, London, Tokyo and Hong Kong. Our performance is distinguished -- since 1998 Citadel has generated over $10 billion in net profits. The Financial Technology Associates Program (FTAP) is for exceptional students who want to apply their programming skills to the Finance industry. This program provides the opportunity to build finance and business acumen in the alternative investment industry. There are three components to this program: training, rotations and a competitive placement process.
TRAINING
Graduate Level Academic Coursework The program provides the equivalent of graduate
level coursework in financial areas which are key to Citadel’s success. These
classes are taught in-house by professors from top-ranked business schools in
topics such as Accounting, Derivatives, Investments and Statistics.
Investment Strategy Case Studies
You will take part in case studies developed to help provide insight into Citadel’s
investment strategies. Each business will supply you with training and case
studies to give you exposure to our proprietary investment strategies.
Live Investing Experience
You will take part in a hands-on investing experience allocating the firm’s
capital. It is Citadel’s belief that FTAP participants will develop a superior
understanding of the importance of technology.
