Policy on Hours of Work

RE: POLICY ON HOURS OF WORK
TO: ALL STAFF
FR: Jitendra Malik, Chair EECS
Roger Howe, Chair EE

This memo is intended to reaffirm the standard hours of work expected of our staff members and clarify our policy and practice.

Staff Personnel Policy (Non-Exempt Employees) and the CUE and UPTE contract state that the standard work schedule for full time employees shall be eight hours per day for five consecutive days, excluding the meal period. Our standard work day is 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with an hour for lunch from l2 noon to 1.

Individual alternative work schedules may be negotiated between an employee and their supervisor. Whole units that wish to change to an alternate work schedule must have the permission of the Chair, but the total number of work hours per week must be forty. Alternate work schedules or flextime already negotiated by individuals or units shall remain in place.

Two Rest Periods of not more than 15 minutes (one in the morning and one in the afternoon) are normally granted each work day; they may not be taken at the beginning or end of a work period, combined with lunch or accumulated for use at a later time. Operational requirements may restrict the granting of rest breaks.

Employees are expected to be prompt in reporting to work, returning from breaks and from lunch. If you realize that you will be more than fifteen minutes late for work call your supervisor or leave a message for your supervisor, then notify your supervisor when you do arrive.

When an employee is sick (s)he is expected to call his or her supervisor at the beginning of the scheduled work time for that day. If it is physically impossible to call, please have someone else call in for you.

Everyone occasionally experiences situations over which (s)he has little or no control which cause lengthy delays in arrival. With the approval of their supervisor, employees are allowed to make up time lost by such occurrences by working late or taking a shortened lunch period, provided the resulting lunch period is at least a half hour long; otherwise the lateness will be charged to comp time or vacation time. However, if these situations become frequent, the employee must use vacation leave, comp time or leave without pay.

Exempt Employees

The workweek for full-time exempt employees is normally considered to be 40 hours, and for part-time employees the proportion of 40 hours equivalent to the appointment percentage; however, greater emphasis is placed on meeting the responsibilities assigned to the position than on working a specified number of hours. Exempt employees do not receive overtime compensation or compensatory time off.

If you have any questions about these work rules, please contact Kate Riley (3-6688; riley@eecs)
