2007-2008 Campuswide Commencement Ceremonies

Commencement is held to honor those completing their Bachelor's degree. Although the ceremonies are held in May 2008, all Fall '07, Spring '08, Summer '08, and Fall '08 graduates are welcome to participate. The following link is dedicated to all important and miscellaneous matters concerning Commencement Convocation and Departmental Graduation Ceremonies: campus wide commencement schedules.

An all-campus December Graduation Convocation will be held on Saturday, December 8, 2007 10:00 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Zellerbach Auditorium. Graduating seniors who would like to participate can sign up online at Alumni and Student Relations: Student Programs.

Please note that participating in the commencement ceremony does not automatically notify the university of your graduation. During your last semester, you must notify the College of L&S of your intent to graduate by putting yourself on the degree list, either via Tele-BEARS or at 120 Sproul Hall. The College of Letters and Science provides more detailed information on the steps that must be taken to graduate.

Degree List vs Commencement List

The degree list is how you officially signal the university that you are ready to graduate and are in the process of completing your final courses for your degree. In order to graduate, you must add yourself to the degree list by the beginning of the semester (the spring, summer, or fall) you expect to complete all of your graduation requirements (e.g., breadth, double major, minor). This is done through Tele-BEARS when you register for your final semester.s courses (or by L&S petition, once the semester begins).

The commencement list is how you inform your department that you are planning to attend the department's commencement ceremony. Commencement is a celebration for you and your family at the completion (or near completion) of your college years. It is held only in May. All graduates of Summer and Fall 2007 as well as graduates of Spring, Summer and Fall 2008 are invited.

Transcripts and Verification of Degree

Your official transcript will show your final grades three to four weeks after the last day of final exams. The date of your degree will appear on your transcript approximately three months after the term in which the degree was conferred. Information about the availability of transcripts showing the degree and how to order transcripts and diplomas may be found at http://registrar.berkeley.edu/Records/transdipl.html

If you need proof that you have completed all of your requirements for the degree before your final transcript is available, you can obtain a Certificate of Completion from the Registrar's Office. This service is only available starting one month after the end of the term (approximately early July). Forms for this may be downloaded from http://registrar.berkeley.edu/elecforms/Cert.of.Cmpl.pdf and mailed to 120 Sproul Hall, UCB, Berkeley, CA 94720-5404, Attn: Records, or faxed to 510-643-9201. Certificates of Completion will be issued within approximately two weeks.

If you need proof that you have completed all of your degree requirements before early July, a request for an Early Dean's report may be made by contacting the Letters and Science Evaluation Unit at 510-642-7391.

If you expect to graduate at the end of the current term and need to provide verification to a third party, you may request a Letter of Intent to Graduate from Letters and Science. You must bring with you a Completion of Major memo which you can get from the CS Advising Office in 377 Soda Hall. The Letter of Intent will be generated within 10 working days.

Members of the public can verify a student's dates of attendance and/or degree by providing the student's Social Security Number and last name at http://infobears.berkeley.edu:3400/degver/.
