The Computer Science Minor

The CS minor, offered through the College of Engineering is open to all undergraduate students at Berkeley except CS and EECS majors through the College of Engineering. The course requirements for the CS minor are:

Lower Division Prerequisites

  • CS 61A, 61B, 61C
  • Math 55 or CS70

Upper Division Requirements

  • Any three upper division courses in CS, also including EECS122 and CSc182 (or any cross-listed version of this course).

Application Process

To be considered for the CS minor, you must submit a CS Minor Application after first completing all or most of the lower division prerequisites.

To be admitted to the CS minor, you must have a declared major and a technical grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.8.

Early Admission

Students applying for early admission must have completed 2 out of the 3 CS61 series courses to be considered.

Upper Division Requirements

If you are approved as a minor in the department, you will be allowed to enroll in three upper division CS courses with higher priority than other non-CS majors when courses are in high demand. You must put your name on the waiting list of each course for which you want to enroll. A list of those in the minor program will be circulated in the department and you will be manually enrolled in courses where there are openings, once the semester begins.

Completion of the Minor

In order to receive the CS Minor notation on your final transcript, all the following criteria must be met:

  1. All seven courses for the minor must be taken for a letter grade.
  2. The grade point average for those (seven) courses must be at least 3.0.
  3. You may only overlap one of those (seven) courses for your declared major and the CS minor.

As a CS minor, if your grades for the courses fall below 3.0, you will still be allowed to follow the curriculum to complete the CS minor. However, notation of completion of the minor will not be made on your final transcript.
