Internship Opportunities at sandia national laboratories logo

Sandia National Laboratories is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) multi-program laboratory, operated by Lockheed Martin for the DOE, with major facilities in Albuquerque, New Mexico and Livermore, California. Sandia provides scientific and engineering solutions to meet national needs in defense systems, homeland security, energy security, and environmental integrity. As one of the largest research and engineering laboratories in the nation, Sandia recruits technical staff at universities nationwide, and also provides R&D internship opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students.

Electrical Engineering: Applying their innovative skills, electrical engineering students team with technical staff members to achieve circuit and component designs, realize prototypes of their work, and experience the excitement of seeing their designs perform. Applications include flight test instrumentation systems; wireless communication systems; and remote sensor system arrays. Technical skills include: custom low-power analog devices, digital circuits, mixed signal, sensors and transducers, high speed instrumentation, wireless communications, DSP, embedded systems, and modeling and simulation.

Computer Science and Information Technologies: CS and IT students have a wide variety of challenging internship opportunities where they team with technical staff members in one of the following areas: network (cyber) security, advanced visualization, engineering and scientific software development, computational science, advanced computing, modeling and simulation, and embedded reasoning. Applications include secure distributed and parallel computing; visualization of the results of engineering and scientific computations; advanced architectures; mesh generation; algorithm development; operating system analysis; data intensive computing; enterprise modeling; and data management and recovery. Technical skills include: object-oriented software design, networking, software-systems engineering, knowledge-based reasoning, formal software engineering methodologies, distributed architectures, cyber security, algorithms, programming languages, and graphics.

Internship Program Requirements: U.S. citizenship, high academic achievement, and full time enrollment status in the university. Desired attributes include completion of their junior year and plans for graduate school.

Application Process: Submit via e-mail resume and unofficial transcripts to Mary Byrnes (mkbyrnes@eecs) and should indicate in subject: Sandia' Summer Intern Application

Application Deadline: Applications will be considered through March, however students are encouraged to submit applications early due to the limited number of positions.

Application Review Period: Mid-January to End of March Note: Placement of interns will begin as early as January; therefore it is to your advantage to apply early.
