Risto Puhakka

VLSI Research Inc was founded in 1976 and incorporated in California in 1981. The company specializes in market research and economic analysis on the technical, business, and economic aspects of the high technology semiconductor manufacturing industry. Its numerous contacts within the semiconductor industry provide sharply focused insight into emerging requirements.

Risto Puhakka, Vice President, focuses on the analysis of semiconductor manufacturing and its implications for semiconductor capital equipment market. He is responsible for supervising the research, analysis, and reporting of semiconductor equipment markets for the Chip Making Markets subscription service. This includes technology evaluation, statistical analysis, analyzing collected data, and equipment market forecasting. Mr. Puhakka also runs the client advisory activities, by regularly supplying advice and analysis to leading companies in the chip making industry. Additionally, he has extensive advisory experience to investment banks, leasing companies, and various government agencies in topics related to chip manufacturing. He is frequently quoted by major trade and business publications in topics related to his expertise.

Prior to his senior management role in VLSI Research Mr. Puhakka held various analyst positions with the company. He has done research in all aspects of semiconductor manufacturing as well as analysis of semiconductor capital equipment markets and technologies. Mr. Puhakka's experience includes various sales, marketing, and application activities with a global capital equipment manufacturer in Finland. He has earned his MBA from UC Berkeley with an emphasis in International Business and Marketing Strategy and MS in Mining and Process Engineering from Helsinki University of Technology in Finland.



Liisa Välikangas

Liisa Välikangas
Director, Startegos Institute

The Strategos Institute is founded to adjunct the Strategos consulting company on the recognition that an organization's capacity for wealth creation critically depends on its capacity for innovation, the Strategos Institute is dedicated to helping its member companies make innovation a deep and systemic capability.

The research Director for the Strategos Institute, Liisa holds a Ph.D. in business administration from her native Finland's Tampere University and is widely published on the topic of strategy innovation. Liisa balances her time between the research agenda of the Institute and practice of innovation in the field.

For the past fifteen years, Dr. Välikangas has been a researcher and consultant in both academia and the business world. Her academic career positions include Tampere University in Finland, IMD (International Management Development Institute) in Switzerland, Keio Business School in Japan and research at Stanford University. Between 1996 and 1998, Dr. Välikangas led the innovation and knowledge management practice at SRI Consulting's Business Intelligence group in Menlo Park, Calif.

In recent years, Dr. Välikangas has published articles on strategic management and organizational design in a variety of publications, including Leadership Quarterly, Seoul Business Journal, The Journal of Health Care and Science, International Journal of Service Industry Management and International Review of Strategic Management. Her most recent publication (with Amy Muller) is titled "Strategy Creation in Turbulent Times", to be published in European Management Journal in February 2003.Her paper co-authored with Gary Hamel, "Internal Markets: Emerging Governance Structures for Innovation", was selected as one of the top ten finalists for the McKinsey/SMS Best Paper Prize at the Strategic Management Society Annual Conference in San Francisco, October 2001.



Kari-Pekka Estola

Vice President, Nokia Research Center

DrTech Kari-Pekka Estola, Vice President, is currently Head of Electronics Laboratory and Deputy Head of Nokia Research Center. He was previously professor and director of Electronics Laboratory at Technical Research Centre of Finland. He has received his MSc (1981), LicTech (1984) and DrTech (1986) degrees in electronics, computer science and signal processing, respectively. He is docent in the Helsinki University of Technology and Tampere University of Technology. He is member of Board of Directors to (HDPUG) High Density Packaging User Group Inc., Technical Research Center of Finland and Center for Scientific Computing. He is also member of EICTA - The European Information and Communications Technology Association, and Nokia representative to R&D and Education Policy Main Committee. He is also a member or chairman of a number of academic research institutes.

Dr. Estola has managed and participated in several national and international research programs in the fields of communications, electronics and production technology. He is currently member of ITEA Board. He is also chairman or member of steering committees of several national programs funded by National Technology Agency of Finland, Tekes and Academy of Finland.



Veikko Hara

Professor, CTO, Senior Vice President, Sonera Corporation

Prof. Veikko Hara, Senior Vice President, is Sonera's Chief Technology Officer (CTO). He has a Ph.D. in computer science. Prior to his appointment as Senior Vice President of Research in 2000, Mr. Hara was Vice President, R & D, Telecom Finland Ltd. He has worked at Nokia and at Technical Research Center of Finland (VTT). Mr Hara is a member of several advisory boards in the field of telecommunications.



Aimo Maanavilja

Aimo Maanavilja

Aimo Maanavilja is the chairman of the Finland - Berkeley cooperation program management group. He works as Vice President of Research at Elisa Communications Corporation (formerly Helsinki Telephone Corporation) since 1994 and prior to this as Department Manager of the Research Laboratory from 1990. Earlier he has worked as Research Manager in the Research Institute of Helsinki Telephone Company and the Association of Telephone Companies. His areas of responsibility included ISDN, value added services and data communication. Aimo Maanavilja holds a M.Sc. in electrical engineering from Helsinki University of Technology (HUT).



Heikki Seppa

Heikki Seppä, DrTech
Research Professor, VTT Information Technology

Heikki Seppä received the M.Sc.Tech, Lic. Tech. degree, and Dr. Tech. degrees in technology, from Helsinki University of Technology, Espoo, Finland, on 1977, 1979 and 1989, respectively.

From 1976 to 1979, he was an assistant at the Helsinki University of Technology, working in the area of electrical metrology. He joined the Technical Research Centre of Finland, Espoo, in 1979 and since 1989 he has been employed there as a Research Professor. In 1994, he was appointed Head of the Measurement Technology field at VTT Automation and in 1996-1998; he acted as Research Director, VTT Automation. In 2002 he was appointed as Research Director, VTT Information Technology. He has done research work on electrical metrology, in general, and on superconducting devices for measurement applications, in particular. He is doing research on dc SQUID's, quantized Hall effect, SET-devices, rf instruments and micro-electromechanical devices. Recently his main focus is research in mesoscopic physics e.g., related to Bloch oscillating transistor and short-range communication and particularly passive microwave tags and wireless passive sensors.



Jarmo Takala

Professor in Computer Engineering, Head of Institute of Digital and Computer Systems, Tampere University of Technology

Jarmo Takala received his M.Sc. (hons) degree in Electronics and Dr.Sc. degree in Information Technology from Tampere University of Technology, Tampere, Finland (TUT) in 1987 and 1999, respectively. From 1992 to 1996, he was a Research Scientist at VTT-Automation, Tampere, Finland. Between 1995 and 1996, he was a Senior Research Engineer at Nokia Research Center, Tampere, Finland. From 1996 to 1999, he was a Researcher at TUT.

Currently, he is Professor in Computer Engineering at TUT and Head of Institute of Digital and Computer Systems of TUT.

His research interests include architectural concepts, circuit techniques, and design methodologies, in particular in the area of digital signal processing.



Minna Isomursu

Minna Isomursu, Ph.D.
Professor, University of Oulu

Minna Isomursu has a Ph.D. in Information Processing Science in 2000. She is currently a professor in the University of Oulu, Department of Information Processing Science. She teaches Ubiquitous computing including responsibilities of basic Software Engineering, and Distributed data management. She also coordinates courses on Agent programming mobile terminals and Software architectures.

From her prior employments she was a Chief Researcher on the area of distributed data management for Ubiquitous computing in 2001. From 1999 to 2001 she was a Senior Researcher on the area of end user needs for future product concepts in Nokia Mobile Phones, Oulu. From 1993 to 1999 she was a Researcher and Senior Researcher on the area of software engineering and software process improvement in VTT Electronics, Oulu. From 1996 to 1997 she was a Visiting Researcher on the area of software process improvement in Fraunhofer IESE, Kaiserslautern In Germany.

Her research interests are in user experience, adaptivity and usability in ubiquitous computing and intelligent environments, and user generated multimedia content.



Raimo Kantola

Raimo Kantola, DrTech
Professor, Helsinki University of Technology

Raimo Kantola received the M.Sc. degree in applied mathematics and computer science from the Leningrad Electrotechnical University in 1981, DrTech degree in computer science from Helsinki University of Technology in 1995.

He is a professor in Helsinki University of Technology, nominated by the University board in May 2001 for 5-year period, 2001 - 2006. He started in HUT as the acting professor on Telecommunications Technology in 1996. In 1997, he initiated a Studia Generalia on Telecommunications at HUT. In 1999, he was a director of the International Masters Programme in Telecommunications and in 20001, a director of International Study Affairs at HUT. He was a Head of the Laboratory of Telecommunications Technology in 1998, 2000, and 2002. He has done research in the areas of Traffic Classification in the Internet, IP switching technology, IP Voice Systems and QoS routing in the Internet. He is a leader of TEKES funded Spear Head project on Intelligent Routing Network.

From his prior employments Mr. Kantola has experience in software engineering for the DX 200 (Nokia), R&D manager, Head of switching product marketing in UK. He has been a member of TINA core-team at Bellcore, the Member of the Supervisory Council in Sonera, Senior Technical Advisor to the Board of CSC Tieteellinen Laskenta Oy, and FUNET.



Ilkka Suni

Ilkka Suni, MSEE
Research Manager, VTT Information Technology

Ilkka Suni graduated in 1973 from the EE department at Helsinki University of Technology. He worked as a research scientist at VTT Semiconductor laboratory to develop electronic and optoelectronic applications of thin films. In 1980-83 he was a research fellow at California Institute of Technology, Pasadena CA. In this capacity, he worked on contact and diffusion barrier structures for solar cells, ion implantation, solid phase epitaxial regrowth of silicon and germanium and ion beam analyses of thin films and interfaces. In 1983 he became a senior scientist and group head at VTT Semiconductor laboratory.

He is currently the research manager for Microelectronics at VTT Information Technology. His main interests have been in materials technologies for semiconductor metallizations, superconducting device technologies, high performance packaging techniques including flip-chip technology, and multi-chip modules. His recent activities include SOI materials; wafer bonding and silicon layer transfer techniques. Ilkka Suni has authored and co-authored more than one hundred technical and scientific papers. He is a member of the Materials Research Society and the Böhmische Physical Society.



Pasi Lassila

Pasi Lassila, PhD
Senior Research Scientist, Helsinki University of Technology

Pasi Lassila earned his MSc degree 1994 from the Helsinki University of Technology. From 1993 until 1996 he worked as a system/research engineer at Ericsson with ATM traffic management issues. He joined the Networking Laboratory in 1997 and began his postgraduate studies under the supervision of Prof. Jorma Virtamo. During his postgraduate studies his primary research topics included efficient simulation of so called loss systems, and modelling and analysis of TCP interaction with the RED queue management mechanism. He defended his PhD thesis in October 2001. From March 2002 until September 2002, he had a visiting post doc position at the University of Twente in the Netherlands (working with Prof. M. Mandjes and Prof. R. Boucherie). Currently he is working at the Networking Laboratory and is involved in both teaching and research.

His current research interests are: fast simulation techniques (variance reduction), Internet congestion control, TCP modeling and analysis (7fixed and mobile networks), Combined flow/packet level modelling.



Erkki Hietanen

Erkki Hietanen, M.Sc. (Eng)
Programme Manager, Tekes

Erkki Hietanen works as Programme Manager at Tekes (National Technology Agency). He is currently in charge of the NETS - Networks of the Future technology program. He works with the funding of telecommunications projects and is telecommunications area team leader at Tekes.

Prior to joining Tekes he worked as a consultant at Hewlett-Packard in Helsinki.



Immo Seppanen

Immo Seppänen, M.Sc. (Electronics, Economics and BA)
Chief Technical Adviser, Tekes

Immo Seppänen has joined Tekes in 1999 and works with the funding of microelectronics and electronics projects. He is also a member in three European Public Authority Committees (Medea+, Pidea and Eurimus) associated with the pan-european Eureka Initiative.

From his prior employments Mr Seppänen has experience in venture capital and in management of companies in silicon wafer, electronics contract manufacturing and electronics distribution businesses.



Oiva Knuuttila

Oiva Knuuttila, Lic. Phil.
Programme Manager, Tekes

Mr. Knuuttila is currently in charge of the 100 MUSD national electronics program ELMO - Miniaturizing Electronics. He is also chairman of electronics team in Tekes.

He received Lic. Phil. (Physics) from University of Jyväskylä in 1979 when he was employed by Nokia Corporation as a R&D Manager. Employed by Tekes since 1987, he has performed various tasks in ICT field, including a two-year period 1998 - 2000 as a technology attaché in Los Angeles.



Heli Kukko

Heli Kukko, M.Sc. (Industrial Management)
Senior Technical Adviser, Tekes

Heli Kukko has joined Tekes in 2002 and works with the funding of telecommunications projects as well as new technology-based companies. Prior to joining Tekes she worked as Business Development Manager at Sonera Corporation in Helsinki. She received M.Sc. in Industrial Management from Helsinki University of Technology (HUT) in 1995.



Pia Mork

Pia Mörk, M.Sc (Soc.Sc.)
Communications Manager, Tekes

Pia Mörk is Communications Manager at Tekes. Her responsibilities include communication of electronics and telecommunications technology. She is also Managing Editor of the Tekes magazine. Earlier she has worked as Communications Officer at Academy of Finland.



Pentti Koskinen

Pentti Koskinen, D.Sc. (Tech)
Managing Director, Tietoneuvos Oy

DrTech Pentti Koskinen, Managing Director and Executive Innovation Consultant, is currently head of his own enterprise. He was previously research director at Automation and Instrumentation Management Ltd (1988-1990), Personnel Expert Exchange (Comett project) at Fraunhofer Institute (IITB), Karlsruhe, Germany and professor at Oulu University (1996-1997). He has the post of senior lecturer and director of Automation Laboratory (since 1987) at the Raahe Institute of Computer Engineering, Oulu Polytechnics. He has received his Graduate Engineering (1977), MSc (1980), LicTech (1987), PD (1994) and DrTech (2001) degrees in communication, applied electronics, innovation strategy and automation technology.

He is EUR ING (since 1992) and he was as Finnish Quality Award Examiner in 1996. Dr. Koskinen is working for Tekes and for core electronics technology programme ELMO as Programme Manager and as ELMO steering board secretary.



Anssi Kujala

Senior Consultant, EPStar Ltd.

Anssi Kujala is a senior consultant at EPStar Ltd., consulting company for Telecommunications Technology and Management. His current major activity is to manage NETS Networks of the Future Technology Program, which is one of the national programs run by Tekes, the Technology Agency of Finland. He has managed and executed technology projects for major Finnish telecommunications and electronic companies and carried out assessment and business development projects for a number of major Finnish industrial companies.

His previous employments include Counsellor for Science and Technology at the Embassy of Finland in Washington DC, USA, Management Consultant at PA Consulting Group Finland, R&D Manager at Fiskars Power Systems and at Televa Ltd. (currently Nokia Networks).
