EECS Introduction to PINE

Pre-configured PINE Packages

We are offering all EECS/ERL staff members pre-configured pine packages so that they can have a tailored version of PINE the first time they start it up. The following are a list of the pre-configurations we offer and step-by-step instructions on how to use them.

Please note that you will still have to individually configure PINE to recognize your printer.

How it works

The first time you open PINE, a configuration file is automatically generated (called ".pinerc") and placed in your main home directory. Whenever you make changes to your PINE configuration, they are kept in your .pinerc file. The following packages are just ".pinerc" files that have been pre-generated and altered to have certain features automatically turned on. Just decide which features you'd like, send us mail, and we'll send you the pre-configured .pinerc file. Just put the .pinerc file in your main home directory and voila!

EECS PINE Packages:

  1. EECS domain
  2. CS doman

  3. EECS domain/vi editor

If you'd like to know more about how these features work, please see the documentation on Basic Options & Features

If you'd like to implement options and features not on this list, please see our documentation on PINE configuration.

Instructions for Installing PINE Packages:

  1. Send mail to WebTeam and request the PINE package you'd like by number.

  2. Edit the file and remove all mail headers and the included instructions from the top of the file so that the first line of the file reads:
    # Updated by Pine(tm) 3.96, copyright 1989-1996 University of Washington.

  3. Change the file name to:   .pinerc
If you already have an existing .pinerc because you've previously opened PINE, overwrite it.

  4. Start pine by typing:   pine
