International Applicants-READ CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU APPLY!
DO NOT SEND US THE FOLLOWING ITEMS:
| |
Hardcopy transcripts. Beginning Fall 2012 we only require uploaded transcripts.
|
| |
Bank statements or financial statements of any kind (with
the exception of scholarship/fellowship statements). |
| |
Diaries, art projects, portfolios, etc. We cannot process
them. |
| |
Copies of your application. We have everything online, we
do not use paper copies and do not process them. |
| |
Copies of your GRE and TOEFL score reports. We get them electronically
from ETS and these are the only reports we consider official. |
| |
Awards certificates and certifications (and copies of them).
We do not process them. Any awards, publications, etc. should be listed
on a CV/Resume. |
| |
Copies of entire publications. These should be listed on your
CV or on a publication/abstract page. You can also provide them on an URL.
We have far too many applicants to process and review all the publications
provided. |
| |
Letters of recommendations. These should be submitted online.
If your recommender cannot submit them online or is unwilling to do so,
email
and we will send you instructions. |
| |
Copies of greencards, residency cards, passports. We do not
process them. |
| |
Copies of your Statement of Purpose and the Personal History
Statement. These should be submitted as part of the online application. |
| |
CDs or DVDs. We have no way of processing these. Put these
things on a URL if you want us to see them. |
PROVIDE:
ADVICE:
| |
Check your name on your application. Make sure your first/given
and last/family names are not transposed. |
| |
If you do not have a URL for your CV/Resume, the best way
to get it to us is to email us a PDF or txt (only these file types please)
to
. |
| |
If your transcript is of a larger size (i.e. not
8.5 x 11 inches), you can, in addition to an official transcript,
send us a standard sized copy. This will speed up the processing of your
application. |
| |
When you agree to waive your rights to see your letters of
recommendation (i.e. check yes to the waiver question) that means
that you do want to retain your rights to see the letter. When you check
yes, that generally makes the letters look more credible. When you check
no, that means that you want to be able to see the contents. |
| |
Do not enter your GPA in the boxes provided on the online
application. Please leave all GPA boxes blank. |
| |
Send in your application early. November is a good time. That
way, you can be sure all your materials will reach here in time before the
deadline. Also, we receive about 2500 applications a year, most of them
in mid-December. This causes inevitable delays in processing. Certainly,
you should get everything in earlier than the deadlines (December 13th at 11:59PM Pacific Time for
the online application and January 3th for supplemental materials). We have
no control over postal, weather, or any other sorts of delays. If your application
is incomplete when we process it then we will won't accept excuses because
you have had three months to get the materials to us. |
| |
Talk to your recommenders early. Preferably, have them write
their letter ahead of time so when they need to submit it, they can just
upload it into our system. Also, explain to them that the more detailed
the letter, the better it will be. These letters need to gauge your academic
and research ability and potential--a solid evaluation. Usually one paragraph
is not enough for a good letter. |
| |
As far as hardcopies go, more is not better. The less you
have in your package, the faster it will be processed. |
TEST SCORE REPORTING ADVICE:
| |
We require both the GRE and TOEFL. Please see http://www.grad.berkeley.edu/admissions/admis_require.shtml#4_3
for exceptions. |
| |
You are not exempt from taking the TOEFL unless you have already
completed at least 1 year of full-time academic course work with grades
of B or better in residence at a U.S. university. If you plan to finish
a years worth of full-time coursework but have not already done so when
you apply, you still need to take the TOEFL. |
| |
Even if you have been in the United States for a while, did
your undergraduate courses in English (as is the case at a lot of schools
in India, for example), have been working here, etc., unless you have studied
at a US school (see above points), you are still required to take the TOEFL.
|
| |
Take all tests as early as you can. ETS can take up to 2 months
to report the scores to us electronically and our university only gets 2
batches of scores in our system per month. They are also notorious for recording
incorrect names, birthdates, etc. |
| |
All test scores must be current (please see http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/Gradadm/RequiredData.htm
for what is considered a current date). |
| |
Send tests only to institution code 4833. Do not send
them to 4925-it will not get to our department. |
