Financial Support for Graduate Study

The department does its best to support all its students through the first year, with priority given to those students who are pursuing their PhD. All of these considerations occur if and after a student is admitted. Financial support for graduate students is provided in the form of fellowships, teaching assistantships, and research assistantships.

There are a number of Departmental and University fellowships for which applicants are automatically considered if admitted. We encourage applicants to apply for fellowships from sources other than U.C. Berkeley. U.S. citizens and permanent residents are particularly encouraged to apply for the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Defense Science and Engineering (NDSEG) fellowships. Information and forms can also be found at university career offices. In addition, some corporations award fellowships to their employees. Many governments also award fellowships for overseas study. In addition, U.S. citizens are encouraged to apply for the many external fellowships for which they are eligible. We provide financial support for virtually all of our graduate students for the duration of their studies. During the most recent academic year, approximately one-quarter were supported by fellowships, slightly more than half were supported by research assistantships, and roughly one-quarter were supported by teaching assistantships.
