Syllabus For Prelim Exam In Electromagnetics

**Please note that this exam is not normally offered. Students that are interested in taking this exam should notify the Prelim Vice Chair and Shirley Salanio (shirley@eecs.berkeley.edu) in advance of taking the exam.
  1. The prelim covers the equivalent of a year of courses at the undergraduate level and a semester course at the graduate level. At UC Berkeley, the courses are Physics 7B, EECS 117 and EECS 210.

  2. The coverage is equivalent to: 1) Chapters 27-42 in Halliday, Resnick, and Krane, 4th edition; 2) Chapters 1-10 and 12 in S. Ramo, J.R. Whinnery, and T. Van Duzer's Fields and Waves in Communications Electronics , third edition (omitting sections 7.4 to 7.8, 9.3 to 9.10 and 12.9 to 12.31); and 3) Chapters I, 1-7 in J.D. Jackson's Classical Electrodynamics, second edition (omitting sections 3.13, 5.13, 6.11 to 6.13, and 7.6).

NOTE: The following courses may not be used to fulfill the prelim breadth requirement if you take the electromagnetics prelim: EECS 105, 117, 118, 119, 210, 216, 217 and 290E.
