351 operators in 104 countries are investing in LTE. LTE advanced can reach peak data rates of up to 1Gbps. In this talk we will give an overview on the development of LTE and the main technology components. In particular we will focus on the use of multi antenna techniques. We will introduce the design choices of LTE and typical performance numbers. We will also give an outlook on the upcoming Release 12 of LTE, the role of Wi-Fi and some challenges ahead.


Klaus Doppler is leading the Wireless Systems team in Berkeley. Dr. Doppler started the team in February 2011 and has grown to 14 members since then. The Wireless Systems team innovates and develops differentiating wireless solutions for Nokias’ products as well as concepts for future wireless standards in the areas of cognitive networks, connectivity solutions and radio implementation. The team is multi-disciplinary and takes a cross-layer approach. It has a special role in collaborating with universities, operators and chipset and network manufactures in North America.

He joined Nokia Research Center in 2002 in Helsinki and has been working in research related to future radio systems since then. He received several inventor awards and In 2008/2009 was among the top 10 inventors of Nokia.

Before moving to Berkeley, Dr. Doppler has been leading and contributing to research activities on the design and integration of novel radio concepts into cellular systems, including device-to-device communication, (cooperative) relaying and multiband operation. He has also been involved in two European research projects. He has been the proof-of-concept subtask leader within the relaying task of WINNER II and leading the device-to-device communication and network coding task within WINNER+. 

In 2010 he defended his Ph.D. thesis at Helsinki University of Technology, Finland and in 2003 received a Dipl. Ing. in Electrical Engineering from Graz University of Technology, Austria.
